  1. Together we prepare a detailed job description corresponding to your real needs: is this about data analysis, basic queries, reporting, data mining, big data or new technologies?
  2. We identify candidates on the market in particular through close collaborations with Belgian universities (Ghent, ULB/VUB, UCLouvain…)
  3. You hire the right candidate!
  4. He/she assists a 12 weeks data science bootcamp , including: high-level overview, data science for business, technical stack (SAS, R, Python…), introduction to specific technologies/topics (NoSQL or graph databases, social network analysis, text-mining..)
  5. Then he/she works for you at our offices during 4 tot 6 month, coached by one of our expert. On the job coaching on real projects: your projects but also hackathons, technology workshops, meetups…
  6. After those 10 intensive months, (s)he is ready to work for you on site. (S)He will demonstrate his/her knowledge by giving a course on a specific topic and/or writing entries in specialised blogs, giving a presentation at a conference…

We are kicking this Manufacturing Sustainability Hackathon on February 26th.

The plan is to use one year of manufacturing data and work towards a more sustainable process. After the introduction on February 26th , we will meet 4 evenings to work on the data. Finalists will present their results on #DIS2016 on March 23rd.

Hackathon – Process Manufacturing – Kick Off

BLOCK THE DATE

This is the initial shout for this Process Manufacturing Hackathon that we are organizing with P&G, one of the major FMCG companies of the world.

Please block your afternoon of FEB 26 to attend in their pilot plant the presentation of the manufacturing process and the data structure that will be used during the Hackathon.

The presentation will be made at the pilot site of this big FMCG company located near the Heysel, Brussels. More details will follow soon as soon as the formal approval for communication is granted.

About this Hackathon:

We have one year of data from a production sites in Europe.

We will have the support of the process engineers that will explain us how the production process work and how the data is structured.

IBM will provide us their Bluemix environment and train us on 9/2 18:30.

RSVP for the launch and get all the detailed informations. We will meet 4 evening spread over 4 weeks (3/3, 10/3, 17/3, 21/3 ) in order to work on one of these 3 challenges:

  • Process Improvement
  • Nicer Dashboards

Your role

The role of Data Scientist was named ‘The Sexiest Job of the 21st Century’ by CNBC. The Senior Data Scientist will join the analytics team in developing the next generation of cloud-based big data analytics platforms. The Senior Data Scientist is responsible for creating highly scalable platform components to support real-time analytics and advanced modeling and predictions. He or She is broadly involved in every aspect of the platform including data collection, cleansing, exploration, model training, optimization, reporting, and visualization.

Essential Job Duties but not limited to:

  • Lead analytical projects from requirements gathering to final presentation
  • Mentor other scientists and recommending methodologies and solutions
  • Known as a subject matter expert both inside and outside the organization
  • Work closely with business partners to understand business problems and design solutions to meet their needs
  • Explore data from a variety of sources, both internally and externally available
  • Fetch/Extract data from internal and external sources
  • Calibrate and normalize data from various sources
  • Data Analysis
  • Data Cleaning
  • Data Exploration
  • Predictive and Descriptive Model Development (e.g. Regression, Tree Based Methods, Neural Networks, etc.)
  • Utilize advanced statistical models & machine learning methods
  • Monitor model performance over time
  • Stay in touch with best emerging practices & techniques in statistics & machine learning

Your profile

Minimum Experience Requirements

  • Solid understanding of applied statistics, predictive modeling, data mining, machine learning, and other quantitative methodologies and a passion for innovating with modern data science algorithms
  • Knowledge and practical expertise in conventional & emerging methods and techniques including regression, time-series analysis, Decision Tree, Boosting, Random Forest, etc.
  • Expertise in data analysis software packages or tools such as R, SAS, SPSS, Matlab, Octave, Python
  • Expertise in processing big data sets from heterogeneous data sources
  • Experience of relational database systems such as SQL Server and the query language
  • Familiar with statistical model development methodologies and processes
  • Highly self-motivated and self-directed, with a keen attention to detail
  • 5+ years of experience with real world data

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Implementing real-time analytics with emerging tools and packages
  • Data visualization and implementation
  • Experience of noSQL database systems
  • Experience of Apache Hadoop ecosystem, Hadoop, Hive, Pig
  • Knowledge of cloud computing services
  • Knowledge of Adobe Analytics and/or Google Analytics is a plus

Languages:

  • English, French and/or Dutch

Interesting blog post on Artificial Intelligence

Patrick Rhodes published a very interesting blog post on the history and possible future or Artificial Intelligence. He neatly explains the difference between our current version of AI, where computers mostly follow a rule book without understanding those rules, and ‘strong’ AI, where the computer really understands the rules. Here are his opening paragraphs, setting the tone for the rest of the article:

Yesterday, the very best AI (artificial intelligence) had trouble beating a novice human chess player. Today, the very best human player has enormous difficulty beating the best AI. Tomorrow, the very best human player will never beat any AI. However, that’s not the worst news you’ve heard. This is:

Computers have no idea how to play chess whatsoever.

They also don’t understand Chinese, but that doesn’t stop them from trouncing us in chess or speaking Chinese. Let’s find out how this is possible and speculate on whether or not we can actually create an AI capable of true understanding.
